Whether your child longs to strum a ukulele like Eddie Vedder or Grace VanderWaal or perhaps Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, the team at Los Rios Rock School can make their dream a reality. We offer Mission Viejo ukulele lessons for kids and teens at all levels, from beginners to advanced. Take a quick look at our unique performance-based approach to music lessons.

The Lessons

At Los Rios Rock School, we use a unique song-based and performance-based approach to music instruction. This type of instruction allows students to progress more rapidly because we use music they love and within just a couple of lessons, they can play a favorite song on the ukulele.

When students choose the music, they are more likely to practice and more likely to stick with lessons for the long haul. We can teach using any genre of music your child or teen may love. They might dig Hawaiian tunes or prefer rock, pop, country or blues, or something else and we are happy to teach using whatever style speaks to them.

Along the way, we teach all of the fundamentals of ukulele, including chords, rhythm, tuning and so on, but we make it fun so that students enjoy their lessons and even their practice time. We also can split a lesson, so that students can spend half of their time with ukulele and the other half with something else. In addition to ukulele lessons for Mission Viejo kids and teens, we also can teach all types of guitar, drums, piano & keyboards, vocals and more.

Your monthly tuition includes a weekly, private 60-minute lesson with one of our expert instructors, but it also includes participation in our unique live concert program, which offers students taking those Mission Viejo ukulele lessons a chance to show off their skills.

Group Rehearsals & Live Shows

As we stated above, our lessons are performance-based, which means we get students up and performing as soon as possible. And, our performances aren’t just tepid little recitals. We create and produce amazing live rock shows at top venues such as the House of Blues and the Coach House.

For the live shows, students are organized into groups based upon ability and meet each week to plan and rehearse for upcoming concerts. By playing together in a band setting, students hone their skills more quickly than they would with just lessons and at-home practicing. Additionally, the students form lasting friendships and have a blast along the way.

Several shows are held each quarter, and some feature a mix of genres and styles, while other shows have a special theme. In the past, our students have designed and created original Halloween and Christmas rock shows and many concerts feature original music created by Los Rios students.

Our most advanced students are invited to audition for our Classic Album Series concerts. For these concerts, students perform an entire classic album from beginning to end. This includes albums such as Queen’s A Day at the Races, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, The Beatles’ Abbey Road and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Above & Beyond

While the weekly ukulele lessons for Mission Viejo teens and children and the rock concerts are included in the monthly tuition, we do have a few other unique offerings that might spark your child’s interest.

We offer songwriting and recording courses for students who wish to learn how to create and produce their own original music. Our facility boasts not one, but two, professional recording studios, one of which was designed by a Grammy Award-winning producer.

Our AP Music Theory class is equivalent to a first-year, college-level course and includes harmony, counterpoint and ear-training. Students also become well-versed in analysis, part-writing, sight-signing and diction during this course, which is led by an instructor with a Ph.D. in Music Composition.

Summer camps are another exciting way for our young musicians to come together and have some fun. We offer multiple summer rock camps for our beginning and intermediate students, as well as one camp for our advanced students. During the camp week, we offer a variety of fun workshops and students create and prepare for a live rock show at the end of the week, which is held on our private stage, The Lobby.
