Our Lessons
Our Orange County ukulele lessons are different from the typical lessons you might find at other music schools. First, we teach students using genres of music they love. Whether a student wants to learn to play some sweet Hawaiian tunes or loves pop, rock, country, blues or something else, we can use their favorite music during lessons. Additionally, we teach using a song-based and performance-based method that allows students to quickly learn how to play a song they like rather than sticking with the typical “Mary Had a Little Lamb”-type songs you remember from your own childhood music lessons.
Your tuition includes a weekly private one-hour ukulele lesson with one of our experienced instructors. Students also are welcome to split their lesson into two halves and spend half of the time learning ukulele skills and the rest mastering a different instrument. In addition to ukulele lessons in Orange County, our instructors can teach all types of guitars, piano & keyboards, drums, trumpet, clarinet and more. We also offer voice lessons for those who wish to hone their vocal skills.
Our Live Program
Naturally, we also provide students with plenty of performance opportunities. What fun would a rock school be if there weren’t any rock concerts? Our kids and teens play shows throughout the year at top local venues such as the House of Blues, the Fonda Theatre, the Coach House and many more. We also play at festivals such as the Dana Point Tall Ships Festival and others.
In addition to your weekly ukulele lesson, your monthly tuition also includes participation in our unique Live Program. For this program, we divide up the students into groups based upon ability. These groups meet weekly for jam sessions, where they create set lists for upcoming concerts and then practice with the group. Not only do these jam sessions sharpen the kids’ musical skills, it’s a fantastic opportunity to forge lasting friendships.
Concerts are held throughout the year and some include a mix of genres and artists, including original songs written by Los Rios Rock School students. Some concerts have a special theme, such as our Halloween and Christmas shows. We also offer our advanced students a chance to audition for our Classic Album Series. For these concerts, the students perform a classic album in its entirety. In the past, we covered Queen’s A Day at the Races, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, The Beatles’ Abbey Road and several more.
Our Additional Programs
If your child or teen wants Orange County ukulele lessons, but also wants to write and record their own original music, we can help with that. We offer songwriting workshops and classes, as well as music production classes. Our facility is stocked with the best new and vintage music gear, and the students can use it all! In addition, we also have two state-of-the-art recording students, one of which was designed by a Grammy Award-winning producer.
As an accredited music school, we also are pleased to offer AP Music Theory classes. These classes, which are led by an instructor with a Ph.D. in music composition, help prepare high school students for the challenging AP Music Theory exam, which is taken in the spring.
