The Performance-Based Approach
At our music school, our goal is to get kids playing music they love as quickly as possible. Our performance-based and song-based teaching methods make it easy for your child or teen to progress from not knowing how to play an instrument at all to playing a favorite song in just a few weeks.
Our expert instructors can provide drum lessons and teach using any genre of music your child enjoys. This includes everything from rock to country to bluegrass as well as jazz, pop, R&B, rockabilly, ska, reggae or whatever else they love. Not only will they be drumming along to their favorite music in no time at all, we will put them up on stage and let them show off their skills during our live rock shows.
The Live Shows
Several times each year, Los Rios Rock School students take to the stage and rock out. Our concert venues include top OC stages such as the Coach House, Stillwater and the House of Blues as well as our own private stage, The Lobby.
Some shows feature a wide variety of music from many different artists, while other shows feature a special theme. Often, shows will include original music written and produced by Los Rios Rock School Students. Our advanced students are invited to audition for our Classic Album Series. For these concerts, students perform a classic album in its entirety, such as The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” or Queen’s “A Day at the Races.”
How It Works
Your monthly tuition fees include both a private, weekly 60-minute lesson with an expert instructor as well as participation in our live program. If you need Dana Point drum lessons, your child will meet with an expert drum instructor every week for a full hour. However, you also are able to consider enjoying combination lessons. Many of our students will spend half of their private lesson on one instrument and the other half working on another skill.
For instance, a student might spend 30 minutes on drum lessons and 30 minutes on piano lessons or perhaps spend half the time working on the drums and rest working on vocal instruction. Our instructors can teach just about any instrument including drums, all types of guitar, ukulele, clarinet, piano & keyboards, saxophone and much more, as well as voice lessons and even songwriting or music theory.
In addition to your full hour of weekly Dana Point drum lessons, your tuition includes weekly group rehearsals and the live shows. Students are organized into groups based upon ability and each group develops set lists for upcoming shows and then practices the songs during weekly jam sessions. Additionally, our facility is stocked with top-of-the-line new and vintage gear and the students can use it all! Your child could practice using the same drum sets as their idols. In fact, we have five custom DW drum sets and these are the same type of drums used by famed drummers such as Dave Grohl, Neil Peart and Chad Smith, just to name a few.
A Few Extras
Beyond the private lessons, group rehearsals and live performances, we offer a few other perks that you won’t find at other music schools. We offer songwriting and production classes and our facility boasts two state-of-the-art recording studios where our students can produce their own professional-quality music.
Additionally, we now offer an AP Music Theory class. This class, taught by an instructor with a Ph.D. in Music Composition, will help prepare our advanced music students for the rigorous AP Music Theory exam.
Each summer, we also offer several summer camp experiences. One camp is designed specifically for our students with less musical experience and one is designed for advanced students. The week-long camps include songwriting workshops, jam sessions, production workshops, games and much more.
