Instrumental music lessons have been shown to increase test scores and overall school performance, however, Irvine piano lessons can be rather dull and uninspiring. At Los Rios Rock School, we aim to change the idea that piano lessons have to be bogged down with theory in order to be effective. We offer engaging, exciting lessons that inspire students and build a lifelong love of music.
Our Lessons
It’s not uncommon to find that weekly piano lessons for Irvine teens and kids last between 30 to 45 minutes, but at Los Rios Rock School, your monthly tuition will include a full 60-minute lesson each week. Additionally, if your child or teen wishes to learn another instrument in addition to piano, we can split the lesson into two halves and spend the remaining 30 minutes teaching guitar, drums, saxophone, clarinet or another instrument, or perhaps providing vocal instruction.
Our lessons are unique in that we use a song-based and performance-based approach to our music curriculum. We begin not with scales and elementary compositions but instead teach using music a student truly loves. Our expert instructors can teach using virtually any genre of music, including classical, jazz, country, rock, pop, blues or anything else a student enjoys. Within just a lesson or two, your child or teen will be able to play a favorite song, and we find that students learn far more quickly when they are learning with music that inspires them.
The Live Program
Once a student has gained some piano experience, it’s time to show off those skills! Your monthly tuition includes participation our unique Live Program. For this program, we divide students up into groups, which typically meet once each week to plan, prepare and practice for upcoming rock shows. These shows are held throughout the year at some of Southern California’s top music venues, such as the Coach House, the House of Blues and the Fonda Theater.
During our concerts, students play all of the instruments and provide all of the vocals. Some concerts include a wide mix of musical genres, including original songs composed by our students. Some concerts will include a special theme, such as our Classic Album Series. Our advanced students are invited to audition for these concerts, where a classic album is played in its entirety. In the past these concerts have featured albums such as The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Queen’s A Day at the Races and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
AP Music Theory
While we are a “rock school,” we do teach proper technique and music theory. We find as students become more proficient, they enjoy learning more about theory and music composition. We are an accredited music school and, as such, we offer our advanced students the option of taking our AP Music Theory course. This class, which prepares students for the rigorous AP Music Theory exam, is taught by an instructor with a Ph.D. in Music Composition.
Songwriting & Music Production
In addition to piano lessons for Irvine kids and teens, we also have some options for our budding songwriters. Our facility includes two professional recording studios, one of which was designed by a Grammy Award-winning producer. We offer classes and workshops to help students learn how to write and produce their own original music. In fact, several of our students have formed their own bands and produced albums using our production studios.
Summer Camps
If you are searching for some summer fun in addition to Irvine piano lessons, we offer several rock camps during summer break. Each weeklong camp includes a variety of workshops and activities, and each week ends with a rock show on our private stage, The Lobby. We have camps for beginning and intermediate musicians, as well as a special camp for our most advanced musicians.
Our music school is located just off the I-5 in downtown San Juan Capistrano. While we may not be just around the corner, Los Rios Rock School can be an exciting option for your Irvine piano lessons.
