“Into Yesterday” Los Rios Rock School Students Nail a Tribute to Sugar Ray

Into Yesterday – A Laid-Back Tribute from the OC Artist Tribute Recording Students
Los Rios Rock School | San Juan Capistrano, CA

The Los Rios Rock School OC Artist Tribute Recording Students have just released their powerful rendition of “Into Yesterday” by Sugar Ray, originally featured on the Surf’s Up movie soundtrack. This track is one of eight professionally recorded songs created by a select group of students who auditioned for and earned their spot in this advanced project.

While Los Rios Rock School welcomes beginner to advanced students ages 6 and up from across San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Laguna Niguel, Ladera Ranch, Dana Point, and Mission Viejo, we also offer unique opportunities for our most committed musicians. These long-time students are part of our year-round music lessons and performance academy, and their dedication led them to collaborate on something truly special.

The recording project was led by Phil Allen, Grammy Award-winning producer and Los Rios Rock School’s music director, alongside longtime instructor and respected producer Clark Souter. Both mentors praised the group’s chemistry, talent, and professionalism.

“Every student on this project brought something unique, and together they made sure the process stayed smooth and fun,” said Allen.

“Into Yesterday” may have introduced Sugar Ray to a new generation, but its roots run deep in Orange County. The band itself got its start in nearby Newport Beach. While instructors at Los Rios remember their late-‘90s hits like Fly, Every Morning, and Someday, students today associate Sugar Ray most closely with Surf’s Up—a local favorite that perfectly blends surf culture and music.

This version of “Into Yesterday” showcases Joel Williams who takes guitar and vocal lessons at Los Rios Rock School, on lead vocals, guitar, and keys, with every student on the track contributing to percussion to capture that relaxed, beachy vibe.

This recording is just the beginning. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing each of the 8 songs this talented student group has produced—highlighting not just their musical abilities, but their commitment to collaboration, excellence, and artistic growth.

Stay tuned, and be sure to check out our ongoing vocal lessons, music lessons, and youth performance programs at Los Rios Rock School. Whether you’re just starting your musical journey or looking for advanced projects like this one, there’s a place for you here.
